Drooling Over the RED Scarlet Camera
A rep from RED Camera showed up at CES with RED Scarlet and Bomb EVF prototypes in tow and was mobbed during a hands-on demo at the Engadet trailer.
I’m beginning to think this could be the big one. With RAW video, the right form factor and relatively modest pricing, Scarlet could be one giant step in the right direction in the evolution of accessible high-end digital video production.
The HDSLR cameras (Canon 5D, 7D, Nikon 300S, etc.) and the new micro 4/3 format are breakthrough tools that have lowered the barrier even further for quality HD video production.
But to succeed in the long run, the compression schemes, camera ergonomics, ruggedness, precision and accessories must evolve beyond the current DSLR form factor.
It seems to me that RED Scarlet, even with its 2/3″ sensor, will be a very plausible solution for a wide range of production folks.
